In data transmission, parallel communication is a method of simultaneously exchanging digital data between devices through a simultaneous transmission of multiple digits or bits. While serial communication conveys only a single digit or bit at a time.
The IEEE 1284 parallel interface is a standard that, for instance, connects a computer to a printer, or any other devices over a parallel interface. The interface was originally developed by Centronics in the 1970s. It was widely known as the Centronics port. When it was first developed, the main focus was on the computer connecting to the printer.
