The “Iron Dome” is not like a dome that protects a football stadium in the United States from bad forms of weather. Israel’s Iron Dome is a missile defense system that protects Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities against short-range rockets and mortar shells, typically launched against Israel from Hamas forces in Gaza. The Iron Dome’s missiles target incoming rockets and fire interceptor missiles to destroy the incoming rockets in midair.
The missiles are described as “highly maneuverable”, almost 10 feet or 3 meters long, with a diameter of about six inches and a weight of about 11 kilograms or 24 pounds. In 2012 over the course of three days, the Israel Defense Forces claimed 737 rockets were fired from Gaza. Of those, 492 landed, but 245 were intercepted by the Iron Dome.
