Facebook was right to shut down its AI (Artificial Intelligence) research after the chatbots invented their own language, but not for the reasons you may think or fear. Facebook was not afraid, as was erroneously reported, that their experiment had gotten out of control. Rather, they shut the experiment down early, because the purpose was to explore ways to improve AI to human communication and they were not getting results they desired.
This was believed to be because they forgot to program the bots to “use comprehensible English” so the bots created their own “shorthand’. Why waste time and resources exploring a project that cannot yield the results being investigated?
