Actually, during the Golden Age of Piracy (1650’s to the 1730’s) pirate ships were not all that enormous. Rather than being large, they needed to be built for speed and durability. Durability was especially important because they often attacked by broadsiding their targets so they could quickly and more easily board the target ship.
It was of course important to have room for crew members, food, drinking water, and other supplies; but, they also needed room for their pirated goods. While there were many types of ships used by pirates, the most common types were sloops (sail boats with a single mast fore and aft), and brigantines (sail boats with a two masts).
