Pirates get onboard ships by first approaching at very fast speeds, using small boats or skiffs with high horse-powered outboard motors. These small skiffs cannot be detected by radar. The pirates typically have crews of about 10 men and may approach at night or early morning. They place ladders and/or ropes with hooks over the edge of the targeted ship and quickly climb up and overboard.
Once onboard, they threaten crew members with a variety of weapons such as rocket propelled grenade launchers, automatic rifles, hand guns and more. Since the crew members are typically unarmed, they have little choice but to surrender to the pirates.
