In January, 2009, the United States Navy created Combined Task Force 151, a multinational task force, supported by 20 countries, to combat piracy off the Somalia coast. This force included a special team to board ships and seize evidence, and some helicopters. AFRICOM, which stand for the United States Africa Command and the US Coast Guard have also provided counter-piracy training and instruction in search and seizure skills.
The African Maritime Law Enforcement Partnership program created by the US in 2016 has convened maritime security seminars, symposiums and conferences and it has donated ships and spare parts to West African allies.
