The international community is fighting piracy in several ways. The two most common ways are by providing naval escorts to commercial ships and with European Union, United Nations, and NATO military forces that patrol the Somalian coastline. These international bodies have made exceptions to policies and have allowed their forces to enter Somalia’s territorial waters to apprehend the pirates. The United Nations also allowed the use of military action by land and air.
In addition to military means, efforts to improve law and order within Somali and to develop alternative sources of income and economic opportunities for Somali youth are also being pursued. One example of efforts to improve law and order within Somalia has included training for Somalia coast guard officials by Japan, Korea and the League of Arab States.
