Were Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed because of homosexuality?

The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are mentioned in the Book of Genesis. A lot of people believe that these two cities were destroyed primarily because of homosexuality and sodomy. However, evidence points out to the fact that these cities were destroyed for cultic prostitution not primarily due to homosexuality.

However, people refuse to accept this point of view and prefer to put the entire blame on sodomy and homosexuality itself. According to most people, the men of these two cities wanted to perform a homosexual gang rape on two angels that were on a visit sent by god. This infuriated God and he ended up destroying them.
