In the summer of 1974, country of Turkey and its military forces invaded the small island of Cyprus. This was due to several events that took place about five days before the invasion. It was called the Cypriot coup d’etat. All of this had to do with an uprising that occurred involving the Greek government, military and protestors.
Five days prior, the protestors were able to kick out the current President Makarios III who was in office at the time. Nikos Sampson took his place. Then both Greece took over Cyprus before Turkey then tried to take over the island. This conflict resulted in Turkey able to take over the island and kicking out the Greeks. Turkey had far more troops than both Cyprus and Greece combined.
