The police can shoot anyone for good cause. It does not matter if it is a pregnant woman, a disabled person in a wheel chair, or a suspect in a crime. The same rules apply. The U.S. Supreme Court has verified that “officers may open fire, knowing that shooting is likely to cause death or serious injury, when a suspect is: suspected of a ‘severe’ crime, posing an immediate threat to officers, and actively resisting arrest.”
Police shootings, whether intentional or unintentional are always reviewed and officers are often subject to disciplinary action. What is interesting is that in cases of police shootings, the government usually pays for the officer’s defense.
