There is not just one step that needs to be taken to improve community-police relations in America. As a first step however, the police have to establish a much better relationship and trust with the community. They can do these two things in a number of different ways. They can increase foot patrols in order for officers to engage more directly with the public.
Police departments can convene more frequent town hall style meetings and they can hire more minorities, including women, to mirror the makeup of the community. Lastly, they can offer incentives to officers to live in the communities in which they serve.
