For women, Saudi Arabia is one of the most problematic countries in which to travel. It is also difficult for women to enter and exit the country. To enter, women must either be accompanied by a man or be meeting a man at the airport. To leave, women must have the permission of the Saudi male head of their household. While women are officially served before men in places like banks, check-in desks and ticket offices, they are generally not allowed in restaurants or are expected to sit in family sections.
The rest of the time their freedom to walk and move around freely is also restricted. In general they must travel with other women and wear a full-length black robe or an ankle-length dress with long sleeves. Head covering restrictions vary throughout the country and are most strict in the capital of Riyadh.
