Contrary to popular belief, the triangle offense is not outdated and can still be effective if used by the right team. The NBA has shifted into a pace and space playing style and the triangle offense does just that, helping teams space the floor and get open looks. It is also an effective play to get teams defend even the weak sides of the floor, which allows players from your team to deflect defenders and get open. Having said that, it is extremely hard to execute if you don’t have talented players with high basketball IQ.
Arguably the main reason why Phil Jackson’s triangle offense succeeded in the 90’s and 2000’s is due to all the hall of famershe had running his plays. Think about it, Jackson coached Michael Jordan (the best offensive player of all time), Scottie Pippen (one of the greatest playmakers at his position) and Ron Harper with the Chicago Bulls. Those players are legends, so naturally, his plays would work well since talent trumps all in the NBA. Still not convinced? Then let’s look at his Laker teams, they had the greats like Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant in their prime (enough said). Other coaches have used the triangle offense, but they failed most of the time because they lacked superstars running them. Therefore, thetriangle offense can create space, but it requires smart and talented star players toutilize its true potential.
