As a white female, it’s hard to say that I’ve been hurt by racism. No matter who you are, you will deal with your fair share of ugly comments, but being a Caucasian woman, I see far less of it. Don’t get me wrong, I see racism every day—it just isn’t directed at me on a regular basis. Oddly enough, I remember when I first realized that people saw the color of skin.
I was in kindergarten and a friend said to me, “my momma says black girls are prettier than white girls.” I didn’t understand it then, but I always remembered it. It may have hurt a little at first, but I realized later that her mom was also trying to make her feel beautiful in a white-washed society. So again, not necessarily hurt by racism, but saddened.
