When an object is moving it has both speed and acceleration by virtue of its movement. However, both are constantly changing, depending on how fast or slow the object is moving. Consider a stone thrown into the air. At the highest point the stone will reach a momentary standstill. At this point its velocity, which is the rate of change of distance becomes zero.
However, its acceleration, which is the rate of change of velocity is high. In fact, as the stone was constantly decreasing its speed, it is a negative number. It is called a negative acceleration or a deceleration.
