The Roman emperor Nero, Joseph Stalin, Saddam Hussein, and Osama Bin Laden have all been said to have enjoyed poetry, either reading it or writing it themselves. These dictators were also egomaniacs with little regard for human life. Their narcissism was so overwhelming that they believed their own ideas about how the world should be led to the destruction of those who thought otherwise.
Poetry can feed an ego by allowing the reader or writer to express themselves in a way that sounds noble. Poets are allowed to misuse grammar and can still be lauded as romantic and deep. Poetry taps into the deepest fears and joys within us and tyrants are no different.
