In mid-2010, the oil well site that BP owns and operates produced a leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Almost five million barrels of oil was believed to have spilled the oil into the water. If that wasn’t bad enough, the leak took months to be contained. Some people believe that the well continued to leak after that.
Many people were angered by this lack of environmental concern for the damage that was done to the water and animals. The punishment for both cleaning the problem and the fine for spilling the oil was over eighteen billion dollars that had to be paid by BP. At this time, this was the most money a company had to pay in a settlement.
