Most people recognize the Olympic flame and torch as being symbolic of the Olympics. Prior to the beginning of the Olympics, one person is selected to carry the lit torch that has previously been passed around and carried to the site. The selected person will carry the lit torch to the flame. This flame will stay lit for the entire Olympics. The reason is that the same fire will remain throughout the time. However, sometimes the flame goes out due to wind, rain or other reasons. Therefore, many sites will light other flames in order to use those as a back-up in case the flame is extinguished.
These flames have gone out during several Olympics. One took place in the 1970s when a rainstorm cause the flame to have to be lit again.
