The United States received the idea of the gift of the Statue of Liberty in 1886. For the next few years, France had a statue erected to send to the United States. The United States received the statue in pieces. Then they had to put it together. In order to afford the statue, the French government did some fund raising.
The basis for the statue can be seen based on when the idea came to be and how the statue was created. The French wanted to celebrate the American Declaration of Independence which took place in 1786. France appreciated and helped America fight against Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War. They wanted to show their support for independence from Great Britain.
