Data editor and output viewer are the two main windows in SPSS. A data editor is the main window of SPSS; it is the only window that always opens when we run SPSS.
It shows the contents of the currently active data set, although data editor looks like a spread sheet, it is not a spread sheet in the sense that it cannot be used to add totals and subtotals.
The output viewer is the second window that contains the result statistical procedures. It is most used for navigating through output items.
Variable view is where additional information about the data is displayed.
The first main window in SPSS is the data editor window. It's always open whenever SPSS is run and there is a red rectangle in the top right-hand corner to identify this. There is the data view and the variable view. Both components must be saved as a single file.
The second window contains the statistical analysis. It's called the SPSS Viewer. Each of these main windows has separate and different toolbars and menus for managing the information held in them.
