The Mediterranean Sea separates Europe from Africa and at one time was considered part of the Atlantic Ocean. History shows that about six million years ago the sea was cut off from the Atlantic and was depleted; however, it was revived with the Zanclean flood and flourishes to this day. The Sea is connected to the Atlantic by the Strait of Gibraltar which is a narrow straight and separates Spain in Europe and Morocco in Africa.
The average depth of the Mediterranean is approximately 4900 feet with the deepest being 17280 feet. There are many seas, gulfs, and straights within this large body of water, including The Adriatic, Aegean, and Libyan Seas. In ancient times the sea was well traveled by merchants because of its many ports and countries that are reachable by sea.
