One duty that nurses might encounter while doing their job is the task of teaching a patient the things they need to know before they are having a surgery. If a nurse is providing preoperative teaching to a petient that is going to undergo a surgery involving cardiac catheterization it would be indicated that further teaching is in order if the patient repeats back to the nurse that they will be undergoing general anesthesia. During this type of surgery local anesthesia is given so that the patient can report chest pain or pressure during the procedure should they need to.
