Is the following true or false?
William W. Kolb, who created the red candy apple in 1908, is generally credited with inventing sugar-coated fruit confections.
This statement is indeed false. Using a sweetener on fruits dates back as far as ancient Egyptians. This ancient civilization would use honey on different nuts and fruits for worshiping their gods and goddesses. In other areas of the world, the use of sugarcane came to fruition and around 950 AD the Arabs invented caramel.
Each one of these civilizations used either honey or sugar on different fruits to produce a candy-like item. Finally, in the middle ages, candy became popular as well as fruit candies which—you guessed it—combined sugar and fruit.
The practice of coating fruit in sugar syrup dates back to ancient times. In addition to tasting to tasying good , honey and sugar were used as a preserving agents to keep fruit from rotting.
